What Shingle Sediment in Gutters Tell You About Your Roof

It is important to keep your gutters in tip-top shape in order to ward off water-related problems such as overflows, basement flooding, and soil erosion. When your gutters are filled with tiny rocks or sediment, it is only a matter of time before these costly problems occur. In this post, a trusted commercial roofing contractor discusses what shingle granules in gutters tell you about the condition of your roofing system.

What Are Shingle Granules?

When asphalt shingles are manufactured, ceramic-coated minerals—also called granules—are pressed into the hot asphalt as a surfacing material. These granules create the color of the shingles, protect the asphalt coating from UV rays, and provide fire resistance to the roof. With proper protection, the asphalt shingle roof can withstand weather elements such as rain, wind, and hail. However, over time, these granules loosen, get washed off the roof, and are directed into your gutters and downspouts.

What Do Shingle Granules in Gutters Indicate?

When newly installed, it is normal for the roof to shed some of these granules. So, if you see tiny rocks or sediment slightly collecting in the gutters, it is not usually a cause for concern. After a storm event, however, you may see an influx of these ceramic-coated minerals, which can be caused by heavy rain or hail beating down on the roof. Again, it is quite common to see granule loss in these circumstances and does not necessarily warrant an emergency roof replacement.

If the granules loss is nonstop and tiny rocks are accumulating in your gutters and coming out of your downspouts in excessive amounts, your roof may be nearing the end of its service life. You may also notice that your asphalt shingle roof looks spotty or bare in certain areas. If this is the case, it is best to call a professional roofer to take a closer look at your roof before other signs of damage like leaks or mold occur.
