What Are Soffits and Fascia?

While there are many homeowners who are familiar with the basics of residential and commercial roofing systems, their parts and their functions, there are still many who remain unfamiliar with soffits and fascia. Despite being not widely known, these two are very important components of any roof. Any problem with the soffit and the fascia can easily translate to serious issues throughout the rest of the roof structure.

What Are Soffits and Fascia?

You don’t necessarily have to learn everything about your roof in order to take good care of it. However, it will be useful to identify some of its parts so you can communicate better with your contractor in case something happens. Let our experts at Mascon, Inc. explain what soffits and fascia are and the roles they play in a typical roofing system.

What Is Fascia?

The fascia is one of the first things that a contractor will check during a roof inspection, mainly because it is an exterior part of the roof. In fact, if you step outside and take a look at the panel where your gutters are fastened, you’ve already seen where the fascia is. Fascia covers up the edges of the roof and prevents water penetration problems. They are also the structures that hold up your entire gutter system.

What Are Soffits?

Soffits are related to the fascia in that they are both finishing details to make a roof look better. Soffit boards cover the eaves and rafters, preventing animals and other pests from entering the roof structure. Soffits are also where ventilation vents are installed, allowing the roof to “breathe,” and minimizing humidity problems.

Problems With Soffits and Fascia

Because they are used mostly for protection, any problems with these two components can easily lead to premature roof replacement. If you see any visible sign of deterioration or rotting on the fascia or in your soffits, contact your local roofers immediately.
